Jonathan Cornelissen is an entrepreneur from Leuven, Belgium who focuses his work on education and data science. He holds an undergraduate degree in commercial engineering and a Ph.D. in financial econometrics. Both degrees were obtained from the Catholic University of Leuven.
During his Ph.D. program, the data scientist created a non-profitorganization that matches tutors with students in a manner that prioritizes fit and affordability. The program is still used to this day and has connected over 1,000 student/tutor pairs since its inception. The entrepreneur is also known for his work as a co-founder and CEO of DataCamp, a company created to increase data science education and data literacy. The inspiration for the company came from the entrepreneur’s time as a teaching assistant when he was looking for a fun and engaging platform to help students struggling to learn the programing language R. Since no such platform existed, he decided to create his own.
During his time as CEO, the data scientist oversaw company growth that reached over $30 million in annual revenue. During his tenure, the company workforce also at least doubled for five years straight while maintaining employee satisfaction in the top 10-15 percentile. To date, the company has served over 4 million learners.
Jonathan Cornelissen also works as an angel investor with a focus on education. He has contributed funds to numerous startups, including Clever Girl Finance, Kyso.io, perch.fit, and FlyThere.
