OPTrust's private markets program was launched in 2006 to build diversified private equity and infrastructure portfolios that will eventually account for 30% of the Plan's total assets (15% each). In 2013, these portfolios reached a combined market value of $3.1 billion at year-end, up from $2.5 billion in 2012.Fiscal 2013 was aproductive year for the Private Markets Group, with 11 new commitments made to both fund and direct investments. The current portfolio, now over 50 investments, is well diversified across a base of parameters including strategy, geography, vehicle and sub-asset class.Infrastructure investments continued to perform well in 2013, returning 11.8% net of external management fees, on an IRR basis, which is above the infrastructure benchmark return of 6% (CPI + 5%). Since the portfolio’s inception in 2006, OPTrust’s infrastructure investments have generated an average net annual return of 16.6% compared to 6.1% for the portfolio benchmark.Private equity holdings generated a net return of 11% for the year on an IRR basis, below the benchmark return of 24.6% which was exceptionally high due to very strong public markets performance.
