In 1996, Stewart changed careers to become a venture capitalist, joining New Enterprise Associates (NEA), a top-tier venture capital firm. He was a general partner with NEA until 2005 and led the firm’s investments in companies such as TiVo, Portola Communications (sold to Netscape), Netcentives, Glu Mobile, and Xfire. Stewart wrote the “Alsop On InfoTech” column for Fortune magazine while at NEA, and later served as a member of the board of directors for Sonos, Inc. from 2005 to 2013.He attended Occidental College.
