At that time, there was a companynamed Attas Industries Halva, Tahini, and Sweets. Attas was a small private company that was in the business of producing confectionaries and luxury foods. In 1983, Attas Industries was listed on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange and became a public company for the first time.Approximately 10 years later, Attas Industries caught the eye of Meir Shamir a savvy businessman who purchased the company. At this time, Attas Industries began its transition from food production to pension fund management and insurance. Its name was changed to Mivtach Shamir Insurance Agency. But, this was only the beginning. The following year, Attas Industries became Mivtach Shamir Holdings, Ltd, with a refocused mission and new portfolio of assets.Mivtach Shamir Investments Mivtach Shamir Holdings has concluded a number of notable investments. Among them are:Technology: Mivtach Shamir purchased a 10% share in Zen Media, an internet company in 1999. Zen Media was well known for its very popular site—Tapuz People. Mivtach sold 55.1% of its stock to Migdal Group in 2001. It earned approximately $19 million on the sale.Food Production: In partnership with iFix, Mivtach Shamir purchased Tnuva Group in 2008. Tnuva is a well-known Israeli food production company. Mivtach sold its shared in Tnuva in March 2015 to the Chinese affiliate of Brightfood. The sale was concluded for €252 million.Pharmaceuticals: Mivtach Shamir currently owns 26.75% of the capital and voting rights in Vidac Pharma. It invested in the company in 2014, infusing NIS 19 million into Vidac. Vidac Pharma is a biopharma company currently focused on developing ground-breaking treatments for skin cancer.Corporate Social Responsibility A cornerstone of Mivtach Shamir’s strategic plan is focused on corporate social responsibility. The importance of giving back is embedded deeply in CEO Meir Shamir and the company’s staff. To this end, the Mivtach Shamir is involved in a number of charitable projects throughout Israel. Its signature projects are ZAKA and the IDF Adopt-a-Soldier project.The Adopt-a-Soldier program is a unique Israeli project that provides a full support basket to soldiers serving in the IDF without family. The majority of lone soldiers are from abroad but include Israelis too. Mivtach Shamir has partnered with the Ametz Loham (adopt a soldier) project under the auspices of the Wellbeing of Israel’s Soldiers (AWIS). Through the Adopt-a-Soldier program, individuals and business are able to donate supplies, money, and mentorship to these special soldiers. Mivtach Shamir has adopted the 69 "Hammers" Air Force Squadron, the unit in which Meir Shamir served when he was in the IDF in the 1970s.The second signature project is ZAKA, a volunteer-based network of emergency response teams who respond daily to life-threatening calls. ZAKA is often the first to appear on the scene, providing on-site emergency treatment and crisis intervention. Among their additional duties are identifying disaster and terrorism victims, interacting and assisting on-the-ground ambulance crews and medical staff, and community outreach. Mivtach Shamir is happy to have been able to donate a special ambulance to ZAKA. The ambulance was donated in 2015 to the Petah Tikva ZAKA team. It is specially equipped to meet the unique needs of the ZAKA team.
