In 1995, Sonia and her brother, Marc Lasry, launched the group with less than $10 million capital, but within 7 years they were managing more than $12 billion in assets. Prior to Avenue Capital Group, Sonia worked at Cowen and Company as Senior Attorney of the Bankruptcy andCorporate reorganization department. In 1989, Sonia and Marc co-founded Amroc Investments where she was also a Senior Portfolio Manager in charge of investing capital. Ms. Gardner is currently a member of the Board of Directors of 100 Women in Hedge Funds and the Board of Trustees of The Mount Sinai Medical Center. Sonia previously served on the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of the Managed Funds Association (MFA). In 2008, Ms. Gardner received the 100 Women in Hedge Funds’ Industry Leadership Award. In both 2010 and 2011, Sonia was included in the list of the Top 50 Women in Hedge Funds by the Hedge Fund Journal; and in 2013, was included in Businesses Insiders' list of the 25 Most Powerful Women On Wall Street. Women progressing in the workplace is an issue close to Gardner’s heart. She explains: “Things have improved since I started over 25 years ago in terms of having more senior women – but there is room for more improvement in the coming years... I would like to see more women in both senior and middle-management positions. Ms. Gardner holds a BA (Hons) from Clark University in Philosophy and a J.D. from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.
