Earlens Earlens
Earlens is a privately held medical technology company committed to transforming the hearing experience for millions of people who suffer from hearing loss. The company has developed the Earlens Contact Hearing Solution, which directly activates natural hearing, delivering the broadest bandwidth available today and superior sound quality. Thisrevolutionary, non-surgical hearing solution uses a small lens to vibrate the eardrum, replicating the natural hearing process. The Earlens Contact Hearing Solution received FDA clearance in 2019 for a second generation of the Earlens technology. Unlike traditional hearing aids, which are in effect tiny speakers that simply turn up the volume on air conducted sound, the Earlens Contact Hearing Solution™ is the world’s first to deliver sound directly to the eardrum. $87M / Series D / Oct 22, 2018
OrphoMed OrphoMed
OrphoMed is a San Francisco Bay Area pharmaceutical company focused on the development of novel first-in-class therapeutic dimer conjugates based on its proprietary DIMERx™ platform technology. The company is leveraging its DIMERx™ technology to address the problem of visceral hypersensitivity and pancreatitis in the treatment of gastrointestinaldisorders and the unmet medical needs in the treatment of both peripheral neuropathic and systemic nociceptive pain. The lead candidate ORP-101 is a peripherally acting sodium ion channel blocker (Nav 1.7), mu agonist/kappa antagonist dimer. The molecule does not cross the blood brain barrier and, unlike other opioids that constrict the sphincter of Oddi, ORP-101, when given intravenously in animal studies, has instead been shown to relax the sphincter. The former attribute implies no abuse potential and the latter minimizes the risks of pancreatitis and/or abdominal pain related to sphincter of Oddi constriction. These two attributes, in combination with the well-understood pharmacology of ORP-101, make the molecule a suitable candidate for chronic treatment of conditions associated with visceral and somatic hypersensitivity and hyperalgesia. Therefore we have positioned ORP-101 for two non-overlapping indications: the oral form for colonic hyperalgesia and gastric dysmotility in IBS-D and the parenteral form for the treatment of peripheral neuropathic pain. The potential clinical benefits are backed by compelling data from validated animal models. The company is also developing potent non-opioid and opioid conjugates to treat acute and chronic nociceptive pain. The non-opioid analgesic conjugate is designed to be non-ulcerogenic and liver-safe and, therefore, has the potential to reshape the pain market served by acetaminophen and NSAIDs. Similarly, the opioid conjugate is designed to be orally active and have a lower potential for dependence than currently available opioids.DIMERx™ technology results in conjugates designed to preserve the receptor pharmacology of their individual constituents, but to have therapeutic profiles well suited for different clinical indications. The components of the conjugates have all been previously proven to be safe and effective for other indications and, therefore, the conjugates have reduced developmental risks. The DIMERx™ conjugates are considered to be new molecular entities and have composition of matter intellectual property protection. $39M / Series A / May 24, 2017

BeneStream BeneStream
BeneStream provides medical aid solutions that help employers make choices in complying with the Affordable Care Act. It is a software-as-a-service company providing a low-cost solution to employers facing tough choices under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). New mandates will require large employers to offer costly employer-sponsored insurance (ESI)to their entire full-time workforce – or face fines.BeneStream provides a better choice for employers with a low-income workforce: Outsourced enrollment in Medicaid. This solution will save employers money while complying with ACA and provides them free, comprehensive, and family coverage. In 2014, tens of thousands of employers must offer health insurance to tens of millions of employees for the first time. As a result, employers with more than 50 employees are considering financially tough choices such as offering ACA-compliant insurance to their low-income workforce, offering no insurance – and risk fines, and cut employee hours to part-time.Employers subject to ACA mandates are asking their benefits advisors for a better choice. BeneStream’s technology provides help to eligible low-income employees enroll in the federal Medicaid program. This is a win-win solution because: It saves employers the cost of insurance for their low-income workforce while complying with the ACA; It eliminates the risks of fines for the employer and the employee; and it provides free, comprehensive coverage for the employee and their family, without deductibles or cost-sharing. $4.3M / Series A / Jul 08, 2015
