Prior to the merger between Banco Bilbao Vizcaya and Argentaria, he served as Chairman of Argentaria from 1996 to 1999. He also acted as Director of Endesa, Chairman of Banco Uno-e, Banco Hipotecario de Espana, Banco Exterior de Espana, Caja Postal and Banco de Credito Local. He founded FG Inversiones Bursatiles, which was acquired by Merrill Lynch. In addition, he acted as Member of the Executive Committee of the Madrid Stock Exchange and the Executive Committee of Bancoval. Currently, he acts as Board Member of BBVA Bancomer SA and Grupo Financiero BBVA Bancomer SA de CV. He holds a degree in Economics and Business Sciences from Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
