Leading up to her appointment as President in 2007, Faust served as the Founding Dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study charged with integrating the former Radcliffe College into Harvard University following the merger in 1999. Before Harvard, Faust served as the Annenberg Professorof History at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was a member of the faculty for 25 years. As President of Harvard, Faust is responsible for all aspects of Harvard’s academic and administrative activities, which include operations and research and teaching activities across the globe, and oversees a $4.4 billion annual operating budget. During her tenure, she restructured the system of university governance, and has expanded financial aid to improve access to Harvard College for students of all economic backgrounds and advocated for increased federal funding for scientific research. Faust has broadened Harvard’s international reach, raised the profile of the arts on campus, enhanced Harvard’s focus on climate change and sustainability, launched edX, the online learning partnership with MIT, and promoted collaboration across academic disciplines and administrative units as she guided the university through a period of significant financial challenges. Faust also serves on the board of Harvard Management Company, which is responsible for investing Harvard’s endowment ($36.4 billion in 2014, the largest endowment in higher education in the United States) and related financial assets to produce long term results to support the education and research goals of the university. In her capacity as Harvard President, Faust also serves as a member of the Broad Institute of Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Ragon Institute of Harvard, MIT and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).
