Calvert Social Venture Partners, VC Fund

Calvert Social Venture Partners

VC Fund

Bethesda, United States

Calvert Social Venture Partners is a VC fund in Bethesda focused on Software and Education. Calvert Group Ltd., known in 1976 as the Government Securities Management Company (GSMC), was brought to life by two young entrepreneurs driven by the need for change and creativity. While conventional investment strategies at the time recommended putting capital into low-interest-bearing savings accounts, former college friends D. Wayne Silby andJohn G. Guffey, Jr., saw the opportunity to create a higher-yielding money market fund available to the general public. In 1976, they introduced the First Variable Rate Fund—the first variable-rate money fund in the country—that sought to combine short-term, fixed-rate securities with long-term, variable-rate securities to provide attractive yields, as well as a strong measure of safety.

Powerspan Powerspan
Founded in 1994 as Zero Emissions Technology and later renamed Powerspan Corp, Powerspan initially provided technology to control particulate emissions from coal-fired, electric power plants. As compliance deadlines of the Clean Air Act Acid Rain Program approached, Powerspan recognized the growing importance of a multi-pollutant solution forcontrolling emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in addition to particulate emissions. Standard technology generally addresses each pollutant individually, necessitating the installation of separate, costly devices, requiring large spaces not always available on space-constrained sites that are typical of existing power plants. Powerspan sought to develop an integrated approach to achieve multi-pollutant reductions at a lower cost than commercially available systems, enabling power plant owners to meet existing and future environmental requirements in a cost-effective manner. $50M / Series D / Jun 20, 2008
